Percentage Calculator
Find what a percentage of a number is, with a clear calculation and no clutter.
How it works
15% of 240 equals 36.00.
Worked example: a percentage of a number
Suppose a class survey has 240 responses and 15% selected the same answer. To estimate how many people chose it, multiply 240 by 15 and divide by 100. The result is 36 responses. You can use the same process to estimate a percentage of an invoice, a budget, or a total.
Percentage of a number versus percentage change
This calculator answers “What is X% of Y?” It does not calculate the percentage increase or decrease between two different numbers. For example, moving from 100 to 125 is a 25% increase because you compare the 25-point difference to the original value of 100.
When results are more than the starting number
Percentages over 100% are mathematically valid. For example, 125% of 80 equals 100. Use the input percentage that matches your question; the result is not automatically restricted to a value under 100%.
