How it works

Discounted price = original price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). Estimated total = discounted price × (1 + tax ÷ 100).

A $120 item at 25% off costs $90 before tax.

Example: 25% off a $120 purchase

Start by finding the discount: 25% of $120 is $30. The discounted item costs $90 before tax. With a hypothetical 7% sales tax applied after the discount, the tax is $6.30 and the total is $96.30. This tool displays the savings and the estimated checkout price.

What happens with multiple discounts?

If a store applies two discounts in sequence, the percentages usually apply to different bases. For example, 20% off $100 brings the price to $80; another 10% off that price brings it to $72, rather than $70. This calculator handles one percentage discount at a time.

Why a receipt may differ

Sales tax varies by jurisdiction and product category. Some retailers calculate tax on individual line items, round differently, or include shipping and fees. Enter the applicable tax rate and treat the result as a planning estimate.
